Merry Beth Sheets at Oak Park After Dark with original art created by the children at Hephzibah Home.
October was Arts and Humanities month and as part of the Oak Park Art League’s new exhibition exploring the theme of beauty emerging out of what has been broken, the children at Hephzibah Home created a one-of-a kind art piece that is now a part of the league’s permanent collection.
The juried exhibition entitled “Through the Cracks, the Light Comes In” opened Friday, October 12 and featured the work of artists from around the world. Working with acclaimed mosaic artist Ahmed Ibraham, the children created their own individual mosaics, which he then fashioned into a mosaic patio table that will now be a permanent installation at the League. The piece was unveiled at the opening of exhibit and at Oak Park After Dark on Saturday, October 13, Hephzibah’s newest event hosted by the Oak Park Auxiliary.
The mosaic medium complements the exhibit theme and illustrates how beauty and new life can come from brokenness. “It was a wonderful experience for the children and it gave them an anchor memory of creating a work of art that will be seen and enjoyed by many people,” says Juliet Yera, director of Development.
“The children have their own experiences with beauty and new life arising from brokenness and the table is a visual and physical representation of those experiences. They are so proud of their work.”
