Many kids in residential care have never felt seen or heard, never been recognized for their unique presence in the world by the adults in their lives.
That’s why, after the Heart of Gold Ball where we celebrate all our donors and supporters, the Hephzibah Oak Park Auxiliary Board organizes a Gala for the residents of Hephzibah Home! Delicious food from The Paramount Group – local Chicago caterers and long-time Hephzibah supporters – is served in formal attire, and awards are presented to each and every child. It’s an opportunity for our staff and volunteers to express gratitude for the specific ways each child has affected them, and for the kids to feel truly seen for who they are and who they might become for what might be the first time in their young lives.
One of the most important steps towards healing from the abuse and complex trauma our kids have experienced is to reassure them of their individuality. When our kids feel celebrated – when specific character traits are identified and reinforced by the people around them – they can begin to regain some of the confidence that they have lost and feel encouraged in the process. Hephzibah CEO Jason Patenaude stood in a full tuxedo to present awards like Creative Designer, Fashionista, House Gentleman, and Soccer Champ to the kids. When the award for Best Singer was presented, she asked if she could perform a song for everyone. The simple act of acknowledgement helped her feel confident enough to sing, which caused a chain reaction of all the kids jumping at the chance to share their talents. Next thing we knew both adults and kids were breaking it down at a spontaneous dance party!
This would not have been possible without the exceptional women of the Oak Park Auxiliary Board at the helm. THANK YOU for celebrating (and celebrating with) the kids, and walking alongside them on their healing journey.
If you’re feeling inspired to share your joy with the kids at Hephzibah, consider volunteering as a homework helper or Heartmate mentor! If that’s not your speed, local Hephzibah Auxiliary Boards are always looking for new friends to help plan events and raise funds.
