While many of us are thinking about the upcoming school year and wondering about our children’s education and safety, Hephzibah’s Family Based Services program is working on helping our foster and intact families meet the burden of preparing their children to return to school.

Because we’ve increased the number of families served in both programs, we need more supplies than ever before to prepare more than 500 children to return to school.

Purchasing all the school supplies needed for the school year is a financial burden many families simply cannot afford.

Families in our intact program are working to overcome the burdens of poverty, homelessness, job insecurity and a myriad of other factors during a pandemic to safely care for their children.  One mother of four told her case worker that she would have to choose between preparing her children for school or paying rent next month – an impossible decision for a mother to make.

This fall will be especially difficult for first-time foster families. These gracious families are welcoming high-need children into their homes who require extra emotional, physical, medical and educational support.

“Helping with school supplies is just one simple thing we can take off their plates,” says Juliet Yera, Hephzibah’s Director of Development. “It allows these families time and energy to tackle the more pressing needs of their children.”

Hephzibah seeks donations of backpacks and supplies, including notebook paper, pencils, pens, markers, crayons, scissors, folders, glue and more. The full wish list of supplies can be found at online.

Deadline to receive supplies is July 30, 2021. If you have questions, contact Volunteer Coordinator Hannah Weigel at hweigel@hephzibahhome.org.
